DOST and DOE Partner to Fuel Renewable Energy Innovations in the Philippines

In a significant move to accelerate renewable energy research and innovation, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Energy (DOE) have joined forces to fund projects that aim to boost the country’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Through this collaboration, both agencies are providing funding support for research projects under the Niche Centers in the Regions for R&D (NICER) Program and the Energy Research and Development Program. The goal: empower Filipino researchers to pioneer technologies that advance renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, ocean, biomass, and geothermal.

Paving the Way for Homegrown Innovations

The partnership reflects a strong commitment to localizing renewable energy technologies by harnessing Filipino expertise. Projects supported by this initiative will focus on developing cost-effective and efficient energy systems that can directly benefit Filipino communities and industries.

The DOST’s Science for Change Program (S4CP), where NICER is anchored, seeks to decentralize research and innovation by strengthening research capabilities in regions across the Philippines. With energy security now a national priority, the DOST-DOE collaboration aims to produce technologies and solutions that can be scaled up for nationwide impact.

Innovation with Purpose

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. highlighted that this partnership exemplifies the government’s resolve to address climate change and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels through science, technology, and innovation.

DOE Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for robust energy research to achieve national energy independence and sustainability goals.

Toward a Greener Future

This joint effort underscores the power of collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, and industry players in building a future powered by renewable energy.

As the Philippines works to meet its renewable energy targets, initiatives like this not only foster technological advancements but also ensure that Filipino talent plays a central role in shaping the country’s energy landscape.
